Requiem for the Impossible (Fulldome)
Requiem for the Impossible (Fulldome) will have its World Premiere as an immersive fulldome performance in 2027.
The work is based on the true story of three working sailors who disappeared in the Indian Ocean in 2015. The Requiem contains an original score, live music (by acclaimed artists Lucy Kruger and Liú Mottes), immersive fulldome visuals and the haunting archival voice recordings of the lost skipper Anthony Murray. Through a dedicated smartphone app, audience members become active participants - their phones used as instruments of light and spatial sound throughout the performance.
We’re using the unique architecture of the dome to blend personal documentary with music and interactive art. Requiem for the Impossible turns a personal, isolating loss into a shared, collective experience of ambiguous loss – a little known form of grief.
Created as part of a special collaboration between award-winning Dutch and South African artists, Requiem for the Impossible honours and memorialises skipper Anthony Murray, first mate Reginald Robertson and young deckhand Jaryd Payne, and brings to the public consciousness the psychological condition of Ambiguous Loss.
Requiem for the Impossible was initiated by well-known South African music journalist Diane Coetzer, the sister-in-law of the yacht’s skipper Murray. A portion of the lyrics for the Requiem score are based on the poetry of Jay Savage, Murray’s brother, and the performance includes excerpts from personal recordings done by the skipper during several ocean voyages before the fated final voyage in 2014/2015.
