Hot Flash Dance Clash
Playtest
For several months affect lab has been prototyping a new Bloody Beautiful project: Hot Flash Dance Clash. It is now time to make a “play test” and we need your moves on the dancefloor.
20 people are invited to a (sneak preview) play test of Hot Flash Dance Clash at Effenaar in Eindhoven.
Join us if…
YOU LOVE TO DANCE
You want to rock the boat of big tech
You’re curious about hot code, hacking and feminist coders
You’d like to queer wearable tech
With Hot Flash Dance Clash, we want to highlight the physical experiences of people with cycles and celebrate them in a way that allows them to shape their own narrative—through dancing! Inspired by data tracking of menstruating and menopausal bodies, we’ve been hacking temperature sensors with our extraordinary collaborators Patsy Nagtzaam, Frank Bosma and Mirjam Debets. DJ and designer Guanyan Wu will be lighting the dance floor on fire.

waiting_for_cows at Karavaan Festival
waiting_for_cows will travel to Karavaan in Alkmaar from 2nd June. This installation offers rare glimpses into contemporary farm life, showing how both humans and animals are entangled in systems of data collection, efficiency, productivity, and time management. Our research, along with a short documentary of the farmer and collaborator, Fokke Terpstra, will be previewed alongside the installation.

Meeting place: VHDG, Naauw 6-8 Leeuwarden
waiting_for_cows: Field Trip, Leeuwarden
On 25 April we will make a one-of-a-kind field trip to Friesland. We welcome you into the fascinating world of cows and their technology rituals.
The day will start with a viewing of our work waiting_for_cows at art space VHDG in the beautiful city centre of Leeuwarden. Then we will travel directly to the source – Okkingastate, an organic dairy farm in the heart of Friesland. We have been given unique access for *one day only* to bring a group of our friends and interested thinkers, makers and doers to this farm where we have been filming and working (on and off) for the past 2 years. Here we will meet the 3 main characters of our latest work waiting_ for_cows. Robina, Margo and Aergentina are all mixed breed dairy cows. We will see first hand how their milking robot operates at the centre of the farm yard. And we will be in direct conversation with our collaborators: dairy farmers Fokke Terpstra & Tineke de Groot. We have invited culinary artist Asli Hatipoğlu to create a unique food experience on site. Bites will be served in the barn alongside the herd.

Will We Bleed in Outer Space?
At Independent School for the City, Rotterdam
This gossip session explores the design of living and working environments for menstruators beyond Earth. Situated within a feminist praxis (reclaiming gossip as a source of knowledge sharing), this event examines the current status of menstruation in outer space, led by architect Thaïs Zuchetti and former NASA space gynaecologist Dr Varsha Jain.

Bleeding into the Metaverse
Tai Kwun, Hong Kong
Even in 2025, images of period blood and menstruating avatars are banned in metaverse environments. affect lab took this as an urgent call for digital inclusivity – to celebrate menstruating bodies in the metaverse – and Bleeding into the Metaverse was born. In March 2025, it was commissioned by Tai Kwun Contemporary for Artists’ Night (in partnership with Art Basel) in Hong Kong.
affect lab presented the project with its digital designer, Babusi Nyoni, and teamed up with local Hong Kong DJs Woonjii and Jayme for a fun dance party!

waiting_for_cows: In Conversation
MU Hybrid Art House, Eindhoven
As part of our waiting_for_cows exhibition at MU Hybrid Art House, we hosted an evening of vibrant conversation and eating.
On this evening, affect lab and farmer Marrit Kyung Ok Schakel discussed how new dairy technologies are shaping the ever-evolving ways we relate to cows, both as individuals and as a society. This was accompanied by a curated tasting experience by Franke Elshout, designed to explore the sensory aspects of the installation.

23rd May 2025
19:45-20:30
Amsterdam Museum, Amstel 51, Amsterdam
Bloody Beautiful x Amsterdam Museum, part of AM Laat: Vrouwen van Amsterdam
In this unique collaboration between Bloody Beautiful and the Amsterdam Museum we pay homage to some of the first Dutch women who documented and shared their experiences of menstruation. We will dive into a little-seen-before archive of letters, collected and saved by feminist Elly Brink between 1970 and 1980 and later re-discovered by curator Debra Knoop. The Bloody Beautiful team has designed a live event where we reflect and read from this unmissable feminist archive that chronicles the everyday experiences, shame, taboo and defiance of women from a previous generation; and relate these stories to our current movement for womxn’s rights.
This event will be held in Dutch.
